Whether you’re keen to try out the dodgier side of nightlife that Tokyo has to offer or just want to explore the streets, there are plenty of things to do in Kabukicho. The entertainment district is filled with bright lights, bars, restaurants and pachinko parlors as well as touts and hustlers—so you do need to keep your wits about you. This is a great place to enjoy the younger scene in Tokyo, and has something to suit everyone, as well as being home to some of the most famous spots in the city. Any place that has Godzilla as an ambassador has to be worth checking out.

Downtown Harajuku
Harajuku runs on sugar and hormones. It’s home to many of Japan’s youth sub-cultures and is a magnet for cosplayers and merchants of cool. It’s also the source of Tokyo’s best crepes—more about that below. Harajuku is one hella crazy place, but you’ve got to see it for yourself. So brace yourself for the crowds, and open yourself to the experience. Don’t open your wallet too widely though—it has a habit of snaffling yens.

Downtown Shibuya

Downtown Roppongi
Roppongi is simultaneously one of the most loved and hated neighborhoods in Tokyo. While home to the Japanese head offices of foreign companies like Google, Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs and some of the best restaurants around, it also has a seedy reputation with a profusion of hostess bars, strip clubs and nightclubs. We still recommend a visit though, the sheer volume of entertainment and eating establishments means there are plenty of cheapo options.
